We are set to undergo an extensive NMIMS MBA branding campaign across corporates over the next one month.
This campaign is designed to break the myths related to NMIMS School of Business Management and to position us as one among the best B schools in India.
We intend to differentiate NMIMS from other B schools on various lines such as academic rigor- relevance of electives offered, all round development, quality of placements etc.
We request each of you to aid us in this and send us your views on
“What you feel differentiates us from other B schools!”
This may include what your criterion is for selecting a B school, the learning that you have got, any area where we are significantly better than the other institutes, quality of events, the areas of improvement in NMIMS and the best thing that you find about NMIMS
Pour in your ideas on http://placecomnm.blogspot.
We desire and would highly appreciate your participation.

ReplyDeleteBy virtue of being in Mumbai, valuable industry experience in terms of live corporate projects. The IIMs especially, I,L and K have very limited exposure in this aspect.
ReplyDeleteBetter faculty, more importantly the visiting ones who can bring in live experiences in case discussions
Case study methodology, followed in few of the other B Schools
Alumni, I personally experienced that our alumni (three of them) are doing wonderfully well in the firm in which I did my summers.
one area that NM should seriously look into is Alumni. they are our advantage over other institutes which have opened after us, having reached big positions in the corporate world.
ReplyDeletethe visiting faculty from the corporates can be encouraged which brings us more closer to the actual working environment. it acts as a two way opportunity for our as well as their development.
Infrasturcture is another thing. we need to have robust infrastructure which would compensate for our not having a big campus. this can be in terms of a better wireless connectivity, bigger computer lab, library facilities and its opening hours, even in fact a parking facility which might look unimportant but for any big person visiting it might form the first impression.
more proactive administartion and faculty would also help.
better student representative body which speaks for us not for the adminstration.
more number of active cells.
Yesterday I was having a word with a senior guy from a MNC and they still have a view that we have 50% Guju Quota............If we can highlight on this fact.........it will be good for brand NMIMS......
ReplyDeleteThe location gives us the biggest advantage and the kind of methodology that is followed at NM works in tandem as students are given the responsibility and the time to utilize it in their own way let it be projects, competitions, social work or something else of their interest. So the real personality and the interests of the students come to the fore. Which I believe is quite different from other B schools where even if the students are given the responsibility to shape up their own interests they never get the opportunities which Mumbai provides and most of the students have similar looking credentials and profiles.
ReplyDeleteIn my view, one area where NM can stand out is exploring newer fields where MBAs have still to make a mark e.g. The sectors of media adn entertainment, sports management etc. These areas are relatively new for structured management and share Mumbai as their base with NM so we can score over other institutes here.
ReplyDeletebranding is just another way of saying that we have to earn back the respect that NMiMs has lost over the past years. And we all know standards have dipped.identifying the causes may give an insight as to what may have gone wrong and what has to be corrected.
ReplyDeleteI believe there are some essential parameters that make the brand Nmims or in my words help in earning respect for the college.
First is the academic rigour and discipline.which i have felt is non existent. It is voluntary if you want to slog out but not compulsory. U can give it a skip and still get decent CGPA. This has to change. Here are some of my suggestions:
1) Increase marks for class participation: We get free marks in class participation and bonuses for attendance. I admit i would never have passed a single subject if i would not have got these freebies. but may be i would have worked harder if not assured of such free stuff. Whatever our personal advantages have been of such system i dont think we can say such freebies enhance our skill set or knowledge base any which way.make it 40% without marks for attendance.
2) Give individual as well as group presentation- Group presentation is nice division of labour but i dont see how it serves purpose of fostering learning if i can only know my portion of work not entire topic. However have group work is important we cant do everythong alone. So i say have a mix of group and individual presentation. Dont have only one prsentation on one so broad a topic that you can never do justice to it in entirety. Have more close ended topics and regular presentation individual and group an alternate weeks. Give 15% to individual and 20 % to group ppt. the numbers are adjustible we can tweak with the Class participation and Presentation thing.
3) i may have reserved less marks for written tests( which may be because as i failed in two papers) and so can be accused of being self centred in my suggestions. But i feel they hardly serve any purpose if i dont remeber it day after the exams.
Academics is only one of the internal things to be sorted out. There are others like events ,alumni which i havent thought off.i will and may find some relevant suggestions in due course.and post them. The academics need to be sorted out though. We should have the product right and then brand it.
I was surprised at the fact that our college is not exactly bothered about the work done by us during our summer internship apart from submitting a 10 page report.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest, have a look at the work done by each of them, select the top 2-3 works or the best with the help of our faculty and show it to the corporates.
I think the biggest forte of NMiMS, is that it is a student driven institute. I dont know how accurate I am in stating so, since I have just joined the Institute, but what I have heard and perceived about NMiMS, it is definetely a student centric institute. Also, it being situated in Mumbai, the financial capital of India, gives us an edge over a lot of other institutes in terms of industry interaction. I believe there is a special student cell dedicated for Industry - Institute Interaction. Plus the case study approach that NMiMS has adhered to emphasises a lot on collective learning. Also, recently the entire curriculum was revamped(thats what they told us during the inauguration)...which also should benefit NMiMS in the long run.
